That is when the Cybermen decide to start knocking on the door of
the TARDIS, only to be burned to a crisp by a passing dragon named Sigin.....
It starts with a dragon taking flight for a better view upon the dark
landscape that is the Time Lord's darkest tribute to the Dark Times, their
shame.
Sigin, with his dragon eyesight, is quick to spot the first few Doctors
(with the elves being a close second).
True, the Doctors probably might be safer if just picked up and transmated
back to the Capital, but Betty had suggested that they pick them all up
and just take them along to see Rassilon (who she hoped could perhaps help
out with the questions about Sarah Jane, Tegan, and Turlough in getting
them home somehow (if that happened to be the best option).
Sarah Jane and the third Doctor are in Bessie, parked over to the side
of a road. Sarah had been able to grab the steering wheel when the third
Doctor had been near death and guide the car to a safe stop. The third
Doctor is still gathering himself from the odd things he's experienced
and also is waiting for Sarah to stop staring at him when he asked about
radiation on a planet of spiders or some such.
"So that is why he's a bit....odd," the Doctor finally says to himself,
remembering the odd behavior his fourth incarnation sometimes exhibited.
Sigin lands out of sight of the duo, and then go over and get the attention
of the two.
Sarah and the third Doctor do an almost comedic double take when they
get a good look at some of Dr. Who's group.
"What on Galifrey happened to you?" the third asks the fourth, staring
at the rather large and pointed elfin ears that poke their way through
the curly mass of hair.
The fact that there seems to be a second version of himself in the same
incarnation is odd (just not done in Time Lord culture) is also important,
but first things first.
Sarah also is staring at the fourth Doctor (who's something like half
of his original size....amongst other thigs) as well as the other elves.
"Something wonderful," the fourth chuckled, hugging Romana fondly.
The third gives the fourth an odd look, as if he'd like to ask some
rather penetrating questions on just what THAT was about, then listens
with increasingly skeptical looks as the story unfolds.
"But you would like proof," Sigin finally says, "Fine. But I must warn
you to brace yourself for a terrible shock!"
He sees that the others are awaiting.....
He morphs back into his dragon form.
Well, the third Doctor takes it well enough (shouts "Jehosophat" and
takes a step back in surprise). Sarah is a bit different.
As per typical pre-Leela Companion, she screams. She also, in addition
to this, faints.
Inquirer is sympathetic enough, but is quick in helping getting the
woman back to consciousness....and helping her calm down.
Time was a factor, still. Danger could always sneak up on you in this
Death Zone place, according to Betty and those native to this world.
Talking them into hitching a ride on the back of Sigin (plenty of room!)
took some doing, but they are soon off again (after Dr. Who gives this
Bessie a fond pat....missing his old Bessie).
"Jehosophat?!" Inquirer finally asks the third Doctor before
Sigin takes flight again, "Is that even a curse word any more? And is that
in the same family of curses as Great Jumping Gobstoppers?! "
Ragan smiles at Inquirer, remembering that the Military in general seemed
to have a.....courser vocabulary to express themselves in stress situations.
"Yes and yes," she calls back, "And now if the pattern hold true, we'll
find the Brigadier and the second Doctor in that....."
THE DEATH ZONE, OPEN MOORLAND (taken from the script for "The
Five Doctors", copyrighted to the BBC).
The Brigadier and the Doctor are hiking along. The Brigadier is keeping
a weather eye on his friend, fearing another episode of that.....rather
startling "fading" the Doctor had done there a bit ago!
DOCTOR 2: I wonder...could Rassilon himself have brought us
here?
BRIGADIER : Now hang on a minute, Doctor. You said this chap Rassilon
was dead. You did say that was his tomb?
DOCTOR 2: Oh yes, but no one really knows how extensive his powers
were.
BRIGADIER : You mean he could still be alive?
DOCTOR 2: Watching us at this very moment.
BRIGADIER : Didn't you say he was supposed to be rather a good type?
DOCTOR 2: So the official history says. But there are many rumours
and legends to the contrary. Some say his fellow Time Lords rebelled against
his cruelty and locked him in the Tower in eternal sleep.
BRIGADIER : And now he's woken up again?
DOCTOR 2: Well, it would explain a great deal. Oh dear...
BRIGADIER : Hmm?
DOCTOR 2: We could be playing the Game of Rassilon at this very moment.
BRIGADIER : Your tone doesn't inspire much confidence - I assume
we're not expected to win?
DOCTOR 2: Come on.
Dr. Who: By all means, Scarecrow. Let's come on.
The Brigadier and the second Doctor jump, not having hear or seen the
others come up on them.
"Let me guess, he's not been out in the field for a while?" Inquirer
whispers to Betty and Ragan as the others speak with the second Doctor
and the Brigadier. "I don't see a man who's fresh off the field of combat
being able to be surprised that easily......"
"Well, he had been about to go o his own retirement ceremony at UNIT
when he and the second Doctor were Time Scooped," Ragan puts in, looking
over at the exchange between the others.
"I see," Inquirer nods, while hiding an internal wince.
Now I see just why Diane Walker laughed her head off when I told
her the name that father chose for the spy shop back home for the new United
Nations on Terra Prime..... she thinks to herself. Probe is going
to just die when he finds out!
Again, it took a bit of doing, but once they got over the shock they
both agreed that travel by air was a much better than walking (and faster).
Inquirer pauses as she overhears a whispered conversation between Dr.
Who and the Brigadier.
"Doctor, I must say you do happen to pick up the most peculiar
sets of friends!" the Brig whispers, "Including the dead as it were! That
and a person I mistake for you.......amazing."
"Amazing indeed," Dr. Who agrees, "I was hoping that, if Rassilon can't
get Sarah home that you could.....?"
"Take her in and create a new identity for her," the Brig said, "I do
have a few friends in the Witness Protection Agency back with the Yanks
still. I will see what I can arrange."
"Thank you," The Time Lord sighs, relieved, "It is wonderful that you
can do this. Just as wonderful as seeing her again, even if en passant
as it were. It was a horrible day when the Master killed her on her wedding
night of all things!"
The Time Lord then pulls from a pocket a blue crystal that makes Betty
and Ragan do a double take in worry.
"What in God's name is he doing with that?" Ragan begins before shaking
her head and stopping to compose herself.
"Bad?" Inquirer asks, "What has the rock to do with things?"
"I'll explain later," Betty sighs as Sigin morphs into dragon form and
calls for them.
Sarah Jane looks like she's looking forward to riding on dragonback.....
Finally, they come upon the fifth Doctor's TARDIS, who Ragan explains
to the others should have the first and fifth Doctor within. But.....
"No.....the Cybermen have arrived already!" Betty groans, "And I thought
that without the Master to lead them there they'd still be stomping about!"
Sigin lands well away from the scene.
"So...now would be a good time to tell us about at least one enemy the
Doctor has run into," Sigin says, still in dragon form, as his passengers
disembark from him.
-
So they do,
and so it's done. All however, wonder just why Inquirer has a particular
twinkle in her eye......
