”Because I……feel that you at least should know what’s going on,” the
voice said, sadly. “I can’t send you home, because it’s impossible for
me to do it….by being against a Representative of the Rules. Technically,
I’m not even supposed to do this much for you, but I’m on vacation from
Rifts Earth…..different story…..and I’m allowed some leeway.”
And it’s also a reason why you’re conscious right now, instead of
asleep going through this Realm, the Representative said to himself.
Because
I wanted to see what you yahoos would do concerning your problems…..
The Representative, 179, had aquired some human traits somewhere along
the line….some of them not good…..one of them was that….he was nosy.
”Can’t the…..Crystallic just……?” Fred sputters out.
”Send you back? No.” the voice said sadly. “The last five hundred years
of it’s memory have been permanently erased, as punishment for bending
the rules set down by the Rules. The way back is gone, but at least the
folks you’ll wake to will be able to help!”
”But that’s not fair!” Astra protested, sounding childish.
The voice is silent for a moment, then speaks again with an edge to
it. Fred and Astra suddenly worried what would happen since…..this being
had implied great power in itself. What would it do next…..to them?
”’Fair; has nothing to do with this, princess,” the voice says. “The
multiverse isn’t fair. It wasn’t ‘fair’ when four out of five people on
Terra Prime died from a disease created by that world’s version of Minestus.
It wasn’t fair that the Lizards started up this insane war with the Alliance
in the first place. It isn’t fair that other analogs of you and Fred got
turned into elves for welching on a promise, though they did have something
coming to them. It isn’t ‘fair’ that an analog of Fred got turned into
a centaur, ruining any chance of whatever life he had as a human back in
the Kingdom.
”It sure as Hell wasn’t fair for the Coming of the Rifts to snuff out
eight billion lives back on what’s now called Rifts Earth,” the voice finishes.
“’Fair’ isn’t what it’s about, nor is it a particular concern to most Rules……our
job is just to keep order….not justice.”
There’s a dead silence for a bit, when the voice speaks again.
”Sorry, I get carried away at times,” it said. “But some subjects
are a bit of a hot button for me. So, don’t bring it up again. Now, prepare
yourselves…..and warn those you’ll awaken to about the corrupt Tarin!”

And now the small flashback
