Nine sniffed the air as it enters the human's residence. While the
smell outside was . . . . mouthwatering . . . . it was also distracting
from it's task at hand. "It" was a perfect description of it's sex. It
was a hemorphodite, and produced offspring at will. Right at this moment,
it wasn't interested in reproducing nor eating. The enviro unit was working
perfectly, so Nine could concentrate fully at the task at hand. It needed
to give it's report to it's superior. It had some rather disturbing news
about the local wildlife . . . and the inhabitants of this world. The minerals
that it's race needed so dearly was here. Their ally . . . . . Nine shudders.
It had silently questioned the wisdom of it all. True, the deal had worked
wonders in "pacifying" the local pests, and the aftermath of it all was
nicely ripe for the picking . . . . . field tests had come up with some
disturbing findings. Then, those damn human savages had to show up! Nine
was the only survivor of the battle. It's comrades had died to a unit taking
out that blight.
Nine was a science officer, specializing in biological study. It was NOT what you would call a combat unit. So it didn't bother to check the flashing red light indicating intrusion. It did not notice the others as it headed into the room to use the com unit. The werefolk look stunned at the humanoid lizard that just walked through the back door of the office. Fred steps forward to speak, and then dives for cover as the lizard draws something like a crossbow from a holster, and shoots an emerald beam that disintegrates the chair behind Fred! The next thing that Nine feels is the power of the backhanded smash
of Pall as the werebear sent Nine and it's equipment to the floor. Also,
though Nine was as strong and powerful as any of it's kind, it still had
weakpoints. Just like a human being's neck, where five pound of force will
break it, so does the lizard like being's neck shatters under Palls blow.
"Oh great." mutters Pall, looking down at the limp form of the Enemy.
"I pull my punch, and I STILL kill him . . . or whatever it really is."
"It sure as hell wasn't friendly!" Fred huffs, picking himself off the
floor. "Get his stuff. Maybe if we get it, and find that magi's lab that
Carradene says might still be here........"
Alicia shakes her head at the last part of what Fred said. Only a month
ago, she had thought that Carradene was a coward and a quisling to Moreau.
She wouldn't have trusted Carradene with a two pence cantrip, much less
a fully stocked mage's lab! Loam and Pall had known all the long the truth,
and had done a masterful job about concealing the truth from her and the
others, until the time was right.......
