Chelene of the Mountain Faerie had, after contacting old friends
within the Court, had turned back to see via how her human benefactor was
doing....
And was horrified beyond words at the scene she saw before her!
Now, dwarves are annoying enough as they are in Chelene's book (brutish
and dull), but the dwarves before the screaming human woman/child are of
the Mil'ar.....the Dark Dwarves. Dark not because their skin is any darker
of hue than the regular ruddy hue of normal dwarven features. Rather, they
were "dark" in the sense of Evil!
Annafrid, the fairy woman knows, should have enough sense to know that
while dwarves are generally immune to magic that there was nothing against
the rules turning oneself invisible and running away at the very least
(she'd secretly seen the young woman assimilate all those mage books).
But instead the young girl had made magical gestures....and suddenly took
up an incredibly dull on her face. Vapid look on her face, she'd blinked
as she looked around as if she was confused as to where she was. She then
had seen the menacing dwarves (who'd decided that this young woman who
wouldn't answer questions would be perfect to practice their backswing
with their sword) and screamed. No attempting to run (which might have
worked and been the bright thing discretion being what it is.....) Screamed
and cowered......
Very much out of character from what the fairy had sensed within Annafrid.
She'd seemed to have a core of bravery within her.....
That aside, the fairy woman was obliged to avenge the girl's death since
she'd seen who'd killed her. It was a matter of honor, for the mortal had
freed her.
The fairy appeared. The dwarves died when the fairy used her innate
abilities as a member of the Mountain Faerie and summoned a fire elemental
(who's fiery nature the dwarves were NOT immune to). Dismissing the Elemental
after vengeance was her's, she then sat down suddenly. The act of summoning
always was fatiguing for her.....
But as she finally turned and actually looked at the corpse of the young
woman who'd freed her she again received a shock.
The fairy woman then had a thought. Had an odd, horrible feeling. A
dark hunch.
She cast a spell, and learned that.....this was not the same person
she'd spoken with just hours ago! The person physic residue of the recently
departed did not have the same taste. It was of an incredibly...... simple
girl. The taste of somebody who'd find scrubbing floors challenging! A
simple girl who's now thought of herself as Annafrid, but there was also
faintly within the residue of a name of.....Helena.
"But where is the real Annafrid now?" the fairy asks the empty cavern's
plaintively.
The person who'd traded places with the real Annafrid......where she'd
been located before the transference, was unknown to the blue skinned fairy.
Unknown, and unknowable. But one thing she did know about the transfer
was that the powers that had been blossoming within the young sorceress
as well as the gift she'd been given......had stayed here and died with
a transferee who'd not the ability to utilize them.
You see, one has to have the gift of magic within one's blood.
One has to be born with the talent to be able to manipulate magic.

"Wherever
you are, Annafrid," Chelene sighed, looking out at a point somewhere, "You
now only had whatever abilities afforded in the new body you have....for
now to your death."
