| What sorcery was this, Astra wondered. Velus, the dog who had claimed
that his rightful form was that of a teenage boy, had turned out merely
to be a disguise of the dragon. On turning into the form of a hellhound,
he had been killed by Fred. Could it be that Velus had not been an invention
of the dragon, but had really existed, and the dragon had found it convenient
to impersonate him? But that would not explain why, if she had now just
seen the real Velus, he had reverted to dog form while she watched.
All this speculation was getting her nowhere, she decided. Whilst she was pondering, the person/dog who presumably could answer her questions had disappeared through the portal. If she did not follow quickly, it might close behind him before she could use it. Casting caution to the winds, Astra descended to the clearing, and prepared to enter the portal.
