"Who knows what surprises we'll find inside! I can't wait, Fertal!"
Artizza said skittishly as they maundered their way forward into the
unknown oaken depths. The gelid wind seemed to relinquish altogether as
they stepped into the warm shelter the tree provided. Then, quite
suddenly, they were standing no more. The seemingly endless passageway had
been an illusion. They had barely ventured a few brave steps into the
great oak when they lost their footing (or rather, the floor beneath them
seemed to just disappear) and went tumbling downward into a shadowy void.
After the initial shock of falling, Fertal's next thought turned to the
inevitable moment when he would violently hit the bottom of this
vertiginous pit, and he braced himself as best he could.
But that moment never came, and they only continued falling. After some fumbling about the two finally steadied themselves as they continued their descent into the darkness, grasping hands and holding on to each other. The temperature steadily rose the lower they went, and even their sharp elfin eyes could not pierce the shadows that shrouded their world. Their ears, however, did catch a slew of waggish laughter resounding from high above, where a faint greenish light could still be made out, if only just barely. And still they continued falling...A pinpoint of reddish light began to encroach upon them from the nethermost reaches of the oak's dark innards, just at the moment when the faint green light from above became completely obscured by darkness. As the light grew in size, so did the mind-numbing fear that now gripped them. A paralyzing sense of impending doom and utter evil awaiting them below crept over their hearts and mind like a growing cancer. Somehow it became clear to them that the very fires of Hell or something akin to that was waiting to receive them...and there was nothing they could do.
