| Eddie Dean - Eddie of New York (circa 1988) is a young man with
what could only be termed a checkered past. That is, if you're in a frame
of mind to be kind. See, before being dragged (almost kicking and screaming
at the end) to the world of Roland's, he had fallen into what you'd call
a bad crowd. And the one who had lead him there was his own older brother
(and not a very good one), Henry Dean. Henry lead him into drugs and got
himself and Eddie hooked on heroin. Then, later, after the a drug lord
took Henry hostage (for "insurance"), Eddie was made a drug corrier and
nearly got caught. However, the Gunslinger had found a doorway....a special
doorway....that connected his world to Eddie's. Roland helped out Eddie
(took the drugs into his world for a time to hide them from the custom
officials), in exchange for a favor to be named later on. See, Roland at
that time had ben attacked by aquatic monsters (large lobster creatures
called Lobstrosties), and had not only been injured (lost some fingers
on one of his hands from a claw attack) but had also gotten a serious infection
that was killing him. If Roland was to survive, he was going to need Eddie's
aid.
Well, one thing lead to another and after Eddie arrived with the drugs
and he was able to get Roland some antibiotics to fight Roland's infection,
but it turned out the drug lord was playing him (Eddie) false. Henry had
died of an overdose and the guy figured that he might as well close the
books on Eddie as well (to keep the guy from coming back later and causing
trouble....I guess). Well, all Hell broke loose when Roland came through
that door to aid Eddie in his plight (big gun battle.....lots of dead bodies).
Eddie got his revenge on the crime lord scumbag, but had to retreat through
the magical door to Roland's world when the police arrived. Roland closed
the door, despite Eddie's cries of protest about how he'd forgotten to
grab a few drugs for himself.
Forced to go cold turkey (no drugs available where Roland was located.....no
drugs of the kind Eddie wanted at all), Eddie was ready to kill Roland
a few times there, but things changed.
First, Roland was able to help save Eddie's very life when a cybernetic
bear (huge monster) nearly killed him (Eddie must have broken a record
climbing that tree). Then Roland's true character AND the purpose and seriousness
of his mission (get to the Dark Tower before it fell and destroyed everything)
came through....and Eddie began to believe.
Eddie kicked the habit, started to begin training as a Gunslinger (with
Roland as teacher) and soon fell for a young fellow Gunslinger in training.
Eddie is a young man (21 years old) with a sharp mind, and a panache
for stupid jokes.
Drives Roland up the walls......
Eddie claims it would help Roland "think around corners", expand his
mind.....
First named the Prisoner because of his addiction and then also called
the Fool (for his jokes), Roland has drawn on of the Three he needs to
get to the Dark Tower.
