What is the true origin of the Staircase Room? Time/Space nexus? Prison for Scott and Josh? Stop off on the stairs to heaven? Just a massive delusion on the character's parts?

I have a sneaking suspicion it's a cosmic version of the Truman Show.

Bonus question: How annoying is Alexis? Very, lots or massively?
