Why is The Black Void so lacking in popularity?

Post by Noise Tank »

Compared to The Never Ending Quest, the place is not very frequented.

My guess is that The Never Ending quest is more accesible. There are many more plot lines and the stories themselves are less sophisticated. There's a little something for everybody at TNQ.

What're your guys' takes on this?

It's a good question. I suspect that part of the reason may be that the NEQ was long-established before the Black Void started. As you suggest, it fulfilled most writers' story needs.

My take

Too many main characters. With the Void, it's hard to keep track. Are you a female you? Am I a male me? A female ten year old? Julius Ceaser? An angry mother? A lost ten year old?

It was ruined for me straight up when you try and pick male or female and the initial small number of choices are so crap and you can't add more. Didn't bother going back.

Actually I like it, but when there's less to build on I end up building less. It's more organized, which may be unfamiliar to those used to chaos.
Few choices? As compared to NEQ which starts out asking if Fred should go right or left?
And i think NEQ has more characters too, they are just scattered at random all over rather than gathered at the beginning.

the choices are lame. pirate, etc.- they lead to really weird outcomes, and not in a good way. not engaging. I am sure that is why it is less popular.

the fred one has simple choices that are more blank so you can fill it in. the void choices like the stupid pirate one hijack you without warning you of the kind of story the author is forcing it to be. from black void to boring pirates in like 3 clips is suckage.

I do agree with what is being said here.

If I could make a suggestion?

If the moderator could edit a couple of those early episodes to make them extendable, I know that, for me at least, it would open up a world of opportunity.

I think that would amount to a change in policy, and to do that would require Sir Toby's say-so. Though arguably you, as a lord, ought to outrank him. :) Sir Toby doesn't drop in here very often, so I'd suggest that in the first instance you should email him or send him a PM.

I think that the reason the first few episodes were made non-extendible was to have each of the six possible combinations of gender and POV (1st person, 2nd person, 3rd person) without any duplication. But I can't see any good reason why the episodes from #7 onwards shouldn't be made extendible.

I will do that. :)

I haven't seen any email about this... So I'll just reply here. ;)

I'm not a huge fan of having lots and lots of links from early episodes. It makes it so that you have a lot of story lines that go nowhere. I think that actually may be part of the problem with The Black Void...

That being said, I could see someone making a case for new links being added at episodes 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10. I wouldn't want to spam a ton of new options here, but if someone has a good idea for a new link from these episodes, I would not be opposed to adding it.
