They sound very similar to a series of 'space odyssey' books by C.S. Lewis. I think the first book in that series is called 'Out of the Silent Planet' (the 'Silent Planet' being earth). I agree with you, Ryu. I think nukes are the least of mankinds' worries. The internal combustion engine is a greater threat, in my opinion.
