The changes in spellings over time, and rate of inconsistency within a given time, is an interesting topic. Samuel Johnson's dictionary was not published until 1755. Try reading a really old copy of Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, or the uncorrected spelling of the original journals o...

These errors have been fixed, and I also added a line of space before and after each paragraph in the story to make it easier to read. I added a new chapter break at chapter five due to the shift in point of view from Fred to Astra, and changed the title of Chapter Four.

I have posted the complete text of the steingeweser story, along with a glossary of character names and places, and the known characteristics of steingeweser as of episode 88754. I took the liberty of editing to clean up grammar and spelling. http://www.carolinachickadee.org/anableps/Steingeweser2.h...

For everyone's reference, I was given an edit option for 88309. I wote that one on December 30, and it had been extended, but not cross-linked.

I think that Astra's family members depend on which part of the story you are in, and are not described in the first episodes where Astra appears. I do know that one of the story lines that I am working with, JH introduced her sisters as Brenda and Carola in 86785, so she would be the oldest of thre...

Internet Explorer 6.0 should work. I know that I was using IE 6.0 for some time and was still able to edit the story. While I do not know the details of how they work, I wonder if there is something odd with cookie handing. I assume that is how the site identifies a writer to make sure only the writ...

That is unusual. I use Internet Explorer 7 without special security hardening, and generally get the edit button after I submit the episode. The cookie that allows you to edit lasts for 30 days.

Thank you. I added another guard near Astra's window whose duty would be to detect any magic, changed "usual" to "unusual," and added a couple of sentences to explain that Astra would usually wake in the middle of the night.

88281: Possible plot hole

This episode has been in draft form for a while, and there may be errors. (I originally called the "Water Tower" the "Nautilus Tower" for example, and had to clean that up.) There is at least one point that I have thought about, and that is whether using one sentry at a post is r...

Lost websites

I cannot get any of the archived links to work on the WolfRun web site beyond that of the front page. That is too bad. I used his map a lot. Perhaps someone stored it on a hard drive or has it in their browser cache somewhere. He did contribute a series of episodes in August, so he might come back. ...

This one is going to look like an oddball, so I will explain. I saw some WolfRun episodes had been written within the last month or so, and was curious. I read back a bit, and found suggestions in episode 1947 that Europe did exist in this fantasy world, but that they could not send colonies to Amer...

Steingeweser (87876)

In one set of episodes Astra has been turned into a creature known as a steingeweser . For anyone reading the episode, here is what is known. 1) She seems to be durable and very strong. 2) Resistant to cold. 3) Needs an undetermined level of light to stay awake, but it need not be direct. Limits whe...

The spammers have now hit the story

Someone extended episode 7380 with spam links. Ineffective, but annoying.

Thanks for the comments. JH, you are right about the unexpected turns that result being a strong point of the Extend-A-Story. I did not make that clear enough. A good suggestion at the right time will bring a story in to being that no one author would have thought about on his or her own. You might ...

To continue the guide: 3. Do not become too attached to one of your characters, or try to dictate the action. Give the other authors some freedom of action. When I am writing for myself, when I flesh out a compelling character, that character is based on experience. The character may not be based on...
