Re: Using Google's reCAPTACHA on Version 2.2.1 of Extend-A-Story

That's great! You're welcome. I hope that these instructions also help others who are running Extend-A-Story. The spam problem here was getting ridiculous until I added Google's reCAPTCHA. The spammers were literally posting spam faster than I could delete it.

Re: Extend-A-Story Version 2.2.1 Released

Great! I'm glad that you found a combination that works for you. Thank you for letting me know. I know that there are some aspects of the Extend-A-Story code base that haven't been touched for many years. I suspect that we will continue to run into issues with newer versions of PHP and MySQL. My goa...

Using Google's reCAPTACHA on Version 2.2.1 of Extend-A-Story

Google's reCAPTCHA has been extremely effective at blocking spam episodes here on Extend-A-Story. To assist others also having issues with spam episodes I've created instructions for adding support for Google's reCAPTCHA to version 2.2.1 of Extend-A-Story and put those instructions in a issue on Ext...

Re: Horsehockey V

I'd be happy to be a moderator so long as you have appropriate anti-spam measures in place (similar to those here) for both the forum and the addventure. The spammers became very troublesome here a year or two ago, posting spam quicker than it could be deleted (!) and Sir Toby had to introduce impr...

Re: Extend-A-Story Version 2.2.1 Released

That version of MySQL is a little old. That version of PHP is recent. Extend-A-Story 2.2.1 should work on your host, but I haven't tested those particular versions of MySQL and PHP personally. Give it a try and let me know if you run into any problems.

Extend-A-Story Version 2.2.1 Released

I've just released version 2.2.1 of Extend-A-Story on GitHub: https://github.com/extend-a-story/extend-a-story/releases/tag/2.2.1 This version uses the mysqli library for database access instead of the mysql library, which is now obsolete. I recommend that everyone upgrade to this version of Extend-...

Re: NEQ and the Black Void currently down

I've updated Extend-A-Story to use the mysqli library instead of the mysql library. I've deployed this change to The Never Ending Quest, The Black Void, and the Beta Test story. Everything appears to be working fine. Let me know if you run into any further issues.

Re: NEQ and the Black Void currently down

Hello everyone! I'm sorry for the Extend-A-Story outage. As JH has mentioned, my website host has updated their version of PHP and this new version no longer supports the mysql library I've been using for Extend-A-Story. Fortunately there is a replacement library called mysqli that I can use and it ...

SSL Enabled for Sir-Toby.Com

I recently discovered that it is easy to add SSL to Sir-Toby.Com, so I have done so. Your communication with Sir-Toby.Com (such as passwords) is now encrypted. This shouldn't really affect anyone, other than using https instead of http. If you do experience any problems, let me know.

Re: Your captcha is broken

I wonder if it could be Lots trying to post two episodes very close together in time that made reCaptcha suspicious. During development and testing of my reCaptcha implementation, I found that creating multiple episodes in rapid succession did result in more difficult challenges. It is certainly po...

Re: Your captcha is broken

I don't have any easy answers for you. It is possible there is a problem on Google's side that is causing your problems with the captcha. Another thing to try would be to log in to a Google account, if you have one. I've heard that if you're logged into a Google account you may receive an easier cha...

Re: Need help tracking down a story

I also tried a few searches using relevant keywords. I found a bunch of episodes that contain the keywords, but I haven't found anything that matches the scenario you describe.

Re: Your captcha is broken

Ouch! That's no good. I'm sorry that you're having trouble. Google's reCaptcha system can be a bit tricky sometimes. One trick I've found is on some challenges where it asks you to identify all of something, they will frequently bring up even more images after you click on a few. You have to wait fo...

Sir-Toby.Com Wiki - Poll

So I'm again thinking of adding a wiki to Sir-Toby.Com. My desire is that authors can use the wiki as a collaborative space to create episode guides for the stories here. There have been a number of episode guides created in the past that have since gone defunct. While we've tried to keep them alive...
