I tried to upload an avatar, but it just told me that the server doesn't have persmission to write to ./images/avatars/.... Therefore it could not save the image file. Then you end up with lots of broken links.

Do you have access to change the permissions on the directory?

The first thing I'm doing is moving everything to templates. I'm big into seperation of logic and design. I have no design skills, but I do have friends with them.
