I haven't seen a final round summary for Round 116. With due respect to the Judge(s) of Round 116, I have compiled this updated and expanded summary for the round, in the style to which I am accustomed. I hope it is correct and meets with the Judges' approval. I'll get to writing up a rule for Round 117 shortly, I hope. :) -Jesse Final Summary of Round 116 Proposed theme: Y2K Round (Credit to Doug Chatham) This summary has been compiled by Jesse Welton using the tables provided by Judge Henry Towser through 116:12. Because in my records I have recorded the time associated with each rule differently from him, some discrepancies exist. I think they are minor, but I have not checked them all. No rule shall make a prediction made by a previous rule. This rule predicts that Al Gore and George Bush, Jr will both lose the 2000 US Presidential election. ----- Can't see anything wrong with this. VALID. It's short and simple, and makes a nice restriction, but I can't quite see how it's going to work. Say, +1 style. 116:2 Nicholson Neisler Thu, 10 Jun 1999 01:57:51 VALID 0 ----- Each Rule in this round may only make at most one prediction. Some prediction may be not true. Prediction #2: Al Gore will win the 2000 US Presidential election. ----- VALID. Again, short and good restrictions, but I'm increasingly nervous about the success of this theme. +0 style. 116:3 Richard Wein Thu, 10 Jun 1999 10:57:01 VALID +2 ----- Each prediction (excluding the first of the round) must include at least one element from a previous prediction. Prediction: Following his victory in the 2000 US Presidential election, Al Gore will be "outed" by gay rights activists. ----- No apparent problems, so its VALID. A nice restriction, with some needed direction. +2 style. 116:4 Jesse Welton Thu, 10 Jun 1999 16:04:47 VALID +1 ----- Since the FRC is populated by such bright people, at most one prediction in each pair of consecutive valid rules will fail to come true. Prediction: Gay activists' "outings" of prominent figures will spark a widespread, violent backlash from radical conservative groups, including a bomb attack at Disney World on Gay Day 2000. ----- Doug and Anton have made some good suggestions, but I think the safest is Anton's last suggestion. I will assume that these predictions are entirely detatched from the "real" year 2000. 116:4 is indeed VALID, with +1 style for a good restriction and raising some interesting issues. 116:5 Jonathan Fry Thu, 10 Jun 1999 16:31:25 VALID +2 ----- The truthfulness of any prediction may be determined from its location within the rules. Prediction: The Walt Disney Company, following an attack on Disney World, will join with Proctor and Gamble, Microsoft and the Citizens for a New World Order to plan eventual world conquest. ----- This looks quite safe, and suggests a route for future rules. VALID, +2 style. 116:6 Jesse Welton Thu, 10 Jun 1999 23:16:13 VALID +1 ----- Since we're not as smart as we might like to think, no more than two predictions out of every three consecutive valid rules will come true. Prediction: Disney and Apple Computer will join forces to defeat Microsoft's campaign for world domination. ----- Valid, since there's no problem. +1 style, mostly because this may confuse someone in an entertaining way. 116:7 David Thomas Fisher Thu, 10 Jun 1999 23:35:10 VALID -1 ----- If a prediction ever logically constrains all of the rest of the predictions to one arrangement of truth-values , it will turn out that Nostradamus said it first. In the year 2000, Disney does not team up with Apple OR Microsoft. ----- I'm dubious as to whether the restriction actually restricts anything in practice. Nontheless, it's VALID. -1 style for an overly broad restriction, however. 116:8 Nicholson Neisler Fri, 11 Jun 1999 22:24:39 VALID +1.5 ----- No rule may explicitly define a given prediction as being either true or false. Prediction 8: After Apple attacks Disney World and Disney breaks their alliance, joining instead with Proctor and Gamble, Microsoft and the Citizens for a New World Order, Steve Jobs uncovers an ancient unread text by Nostradamus which states: "One Great Company will attack another; A fresh alliance will be broken. Four will join together in strength. A Great Man shall uncover secret knowledge.". ----- I'm afraid not. If this were VALID then all the predictions would be fixed to a given truth value, causing 116:7 to make two predictions. +1.5 style though, since I like the way it ties things together. Later changed to VALID: >Simply put prediction 8 does not include "to plan eventual world conquest" >which is in 5. Disney and them could have been joining for some other reason > >I would like to Judge to please respond to this. I find this all very >interesting. Oh dear. My apologies. 116:8 is indeed VALID. 116:9 Aron Wall Sat, 12 Jun 1999 00:12:02 VALID -2 ----- Due to a constitutional ammendment, all citizens of the United States of America will be granted the Presidency. ----- VALID. -2 style for not having a restriction. 116:10 Doug Chatham Sat, 12 Jun 1999 13:01:01 VALID +1 ----- Since we like symmetry, each rule following the ninth rule of this round shall contain exactly one restriction. Prediction: At their March 2000 convention, the Citizens for a New World Order determine that the new world order should be "reverse lexicographic." ----- VALID, +1 style for the new world order. 116:11 Ed Murphy Sun, 13 Jun 1999 06:49:29 VALID +2.5 ----- Since we like neutrality, there shall at all times be a difference of at most one between the number of true predictions and the number of false predictions. Prediction: At their September 2000 convention, the Citizens for a New World Order shall vote on whether their official colors are black-and-white or black-and-red. ----- VALID. +2.5 style for a good restriction and prediction and a very impressive effort to guarentee its validity. 116:12 Doug Chatham Fri, 18 Jun 1999 18:09:48 VALID +1 ----- Since we like the phrase "since we like", each rule following the ninth rule of this round shall start with the words "Since we like" Prediction: After losing the Presidental election of 2000, Ross Perot decides to sell seashells by the seashore. ----- TRUE. Nice but trivial restriction, same for the prediction. +1 style. 116:13 Ed Murphy Sat, 19 Jun 1999 11:06:09 VALID +1 ----- Since we like numerology, every thirteenth rule shall contain a true prediction. Prediction: Steve Wozniak will release a new variant of the C shell. ----- VALID, +1 style for an amusing (if somewhat dubious) connection to previous predictions. 116:14 Doug Chatham Sat, 19 Jun 1999 19:00:28 VALID +1 ----- Since we like connectedness, the prediction in each rule following the thirteenth rule of this round shall include one aspect of the prediction in the immediately preceding rule. Prediction: According to a December 13, 2000 poll of school-aged children, C will be less popular than Stewed Broccoli. ----- VALID +1 style.
