"See!" Sarah yelled triumphantly as she held the laughter by its
hair. "I told you I heard laughter. Ha ha ha! That's right! I've got
it! I've got you, you little…uh…what're you? She stared at the source
of laughter, perplexed. Being held by a blonde topknot was a small
creature about the size of a human child. However, like her, his ears
were pointed and slightly slanted. He had almond emerald eyes and a wave
of wrinkles across his face.
"Oww! Hey, stop it! That hurts!" The little creature squealed in a high pitch voice. "Don't let go!" Amergin shouted suddenly, stepping forward. His concerned face had disappeared and was replaced with fury. "Check his pouches"This confused Sarah even more. "Why are you getting so upset, Amergin? This is only a child-" "This is no child. He's a Kender." Amergin replied, ignoring the Kender's retorts. ("Hey, stay out of my pouches. They're mine!")"A Ken…what? ("Oww! Do you have to hold so tight?) "What is a Kender?" Amergin said loudly in disbelief. "I'll tell you what they are. They're like mosquitoes; unneeded and too many of them. They're the plague of middle earth. They are the itch that never leaves. They're-""Amergin, is...is this your Harp?" Sarah said suddenly, pulling a large object out of the Kender's backpack. Sure enough, there it was, the musical instrument glistening in the rays of the sun. "DIRTY LITTLE THIEVES!" Amergin finished."Hey now, how dare you say that!" shouted the Kender, forgetting about his pain and pouches. He crossed his arms. "Why, you should be thanking me. You must have dropped that while you were walking. If I hadn't picked it up, it would be lost. Now, I demand an apology. Say, why do you have a harp anyways? Are you a bard? I used to have a friend who was a bard. We used to roam from village to village together, singing songs and telling stories. I can you one if you would like. I know, I'll tell you of the time I encountered a Woolly Mammoth, but first, could you please set me down. It's very uncomfortable being held by the hair-" "And isn't this the belt you were wearing?" She said, gesturing to the thick leather around the Kender's waist.Amergin looked down at his pants. Sure enough, his belt was no longer there." "Oh, that's yours!" Exclaimed the Kender, who'd now forgotten his anger. "I found it while I was walking along. You're very lucky I came upon it. My name is Kipper Thistleknot, by the way. Your name was Amergin, wasn't it? Nice to meet you." He said, holding out a hand. He then turned his head to Sarah. "Hi, what's your name?Say, could you set me down please? It's not that I don't appreciate this; it's just rather uncomfor- "Hand him over" Amergin said firmly. He took hold of the Kender's topknot. Amergin then grabbed the Kender by the legs and began to shake him violently. Contents from his pouches scattered all of the forest dirt."Amergin, what're you doing?" She said, bewildered. "We should be thanking this man. "Umm…Is he a man? If it weren't for him, you might have never found your harp and-" "Don't you get it?" Amergin scowled." We didn't drop our supplies. This little pest stole them. That's what Kender's are. Dirty little thieves. They steal from every person who lingers about the earth!" Once the Kender's pockets were emptied, he ceased his shaking."Hey now," said the Kender, dizzy and blinking rapidly. "I told you, I am not a thief. People are so ungrateful. I help them find what they lost, and this is the thanks I get? Now I need to put back everything in my pouches. Although I must say that it was fun when you shook me, so maybe it wasn't a total loss, but still, I haven't forgiven you for calling me a thief. OK, I guess I will. I mean-" and he continued to babble on until Amergin, after scanning all of the contents on the ground nodded and said "He's stolen nothing else." "Look," exasperated the Kender, continuing to cross his arms upside down. "I don't know how many times we have to go through this-""Enough of your babbling!" Amergin glared at him. "Now, I am about to let you go. Immediately put your things back in your pouches. When I done, you're to walk away from us in that direction," He pointed behind them, "As far off as possible and not follow us again. Do you understand?" "I think so. Why is this? Is this hide and go seek? I will tell you I was the king of hide-and-go-seek in my town. The Invisible they used to call me-""Just go," Amergin roared, throwing Kipper into the very bush he was laughing from. Immediately, the Kender's head popped up and spat twigs and leaves out of his mouth. However, he was smiling. He seemed to have thought of the throw as more of a ride than a punishment. He began collecting the contents from his pouch as he spoke casually to them. "My uncle told me about he time he was in a situation like this. One day, while he was exploring the northern ice caverns, he came across a-Hey, I forgot I had these. Look at this. This is a real Dragon scale I picked up when exploring the Misty-Owww. OK, OK, you don't need to hit." He said, rubbing where Amergin had smacked him. Sarah couldn't believe what she was seeing. Gone was the friendly light-hearted friend she'd come upon when she'd entered this world, and replacing him was an anger cruel brute. "Now, go." Said Amergin firmly after the Kender was done picking everything up while keeping his distance and protecting his pouches, Amergin watched closely as the Kender set off into the opposite direction, humming a song happily as if he hadn't just been harassed. Once he disappeared out of their sights, they waited a little bit longer until Amergin said "Come. We must continue." He turned around and began to walk."How could you do that to such a poor thing?" Sarah cried, losing her temper. He might have been telling the truth the whole time! What if you had hurt him? What's wrong with you?"
