Crossing the river

You bid Poof Poof good bye and leave his hit. You then turn towards the
west where you can barely spot the mountains in the distance. You start
walking. You pass farm after farm, some raising crops, other raising
animals. After an hour, you become thirsty, but you keep on going. You
also become a bit hungry.
Two hours later, the path leads to a bank of a river. It stops at the river and continues on the other side. You realize that you would have to cross the river to continue on your journey. You step in the river, and take a long refreshing drink to quench your thirst. You then cross the river and you are thankful that it is only knee deep. Your feet and ankles shiver as you climb out of the water. You take off your pants and wring the bottom part and put it back on. You then resume your journey. The mountain is still a long way away. After five minutes, you ponder your quest to find a sink. You then realize that you could have easily washed the smudge off in the river instead of having to walk a long way to find a sink. So you turn around and walk back to the river. You put your hands in the water and attempt to remove the smudge. Unfortunately the smudge won't come off. "That is odd. Why won't the smudge come off?" you mutter to yourself. You stop to think. How would a smudge appear on the back of your hand and not come off easily? Come to think of it, you are sure that there wasn't a single smudge on your hands when you entered Poof Poof's hut. So did Poof Poof conjure a spell that put the smudge on your hand? You ponder your choices. The sun is already on its way down to the horizon.
