The dorm is a large room, containing 24 beds numbered from 601 to 624. I'm a little surprised to find it completely empty. Perhaps it's not so odd bearing in mind the almost total lack of anything to do in here apart from sleep, though. So I decide to visit the cafeteria. Surely I'll find some fellow slaves there, from whom I can hopefully learn more about this place, and perhaps I can start to make some friends.
One thing I'd like to find out is why the Vorkons need to use surrogate mothers to bear their children. Since my belly is visibly distended, if not by that much as yet, it looks as though I've been implanted with an embryo that is three or four months old - always assuming that Vorkon foetuses are similar in size to human ones - rather than with a just-fertilised egg. I wonder if the embryo has been in its genetic mother up till now or in an incubator - though it would need to be a very advanced incubator to care for a foetus in such an early stage of development. As I muse on this I reach the cafeteria and walk in. The place is crowded with naked women who must be my fellow slaves. They are all fit-looking, young and, at least in their appearance, all seem to be huuman. That is about all they have in common, though. They are of varying ethnicities, height and build. Some, like myself, are only just visibly pregnant, some hugely so, and some show no sign of being pregnant; perhaps these last have a different role from breeder or perhaps they have recently given birth. I realise that I am both hungry and thirsty, so I pick up a tray and go up to the counter. It seems to be a self-service affair, so I help myself to what the sign in front of it claims is a lasagne, and a glass of orange juice. Having collected some cutlery, I look for somewhere to sit. Spotting a table for four with only two occupants, I ask if it's all right if I join then.
