"Cinnabar consulted many wise men and also used the services of a soothsayer. Eventually he came to the conclusion - don't ask me how - that two dwarves would be needed as part of the team that would direct the use of the Engine of the Soul if the correct balance was to be achieved. Now over the past few centuries, the race of dwarves had been in steep decline, and it took great time and effort for Cinnabar to track down even a single one. And when he finally did so, he received very bad news: the dwarf told him that - as far as he knew - he was the last of the dwarves."

"So that is how the book got its name."

"Indeed. So Cinnabar was forced to go back to his mysterious sponsor and report that, though he and his assistants had succeeded in building the Engine, it could not safely be used due to the impossibility of putting together a guiding team with the correct balance."

"Let me guess. The sponsor insisted on using the Engine anyway."

  1. "I'm afraid so."
  2. "Yes. But he had an ingenious idea. 'Let us use the Engine to create a second dwarf,' he said. 'There can surely be no harm in that. Then we will have our properly balanced team to direct the Engine's future operation.'"
  3. "Surprisingly, perhaps - human nature being what it is - he did not."
  4. "Luckily - or perhaps not - a second dwarf unexpectedly turned up in the nick of time."
