Hearing shouts of alarm and gunfire, I turn my head as best I can to see
what's going on. I see several arabs drop to the ground dead, and mere
moments later see the reason why. A large group of soldiers have suddenly
appeared from the entrance we had not long left. It seems they have
finally got their act together and are counterattacking. Again, these
soldiers seem different as they actually appear to have badges of
rank, and as far as I can tell, they are being led by an officer. A
lieutenant, perhaps. They are doing their best to divert the firefight
away from us. The arabs aren't really putting up that much resistance - in fact, the attack appears to have surprised them. They initially outnumber the soldiers, but this situation soon changes fast. Arabs that try to escape are shot in the back. Those that are injured, badly or otherwise, are shot once in the head. The soldiers that have attacked them don't lose a single man. I force myself to watch the one-sided battle to its bitter end, revulsion in my throat. Jane tries to bury her head in my chest as if attempting to block out the screams and cries of agony. She is also sobbing heavily. I try to whisper words of comfort that are ultimately useless. The officer in charge of the group comes over to us and I try hard to keep a neutral expression. It is very difficult. He crouches down beside us. Are you two all right?" he asks. "Physically? Yeah." I look down at Jane, who has finally looked up and is wiping her eyes. "As for mentally, the jury's still out on that one." The officer, who is obviously unsure how to reply, eventually says gruffly, "Right. Whatever. You two had better come along with me." We have no choice to follow him back down below, Jane holding me tightly.
