The guide leads me over to a counter, and in far less time than I would
have thought possible I find myself standing with wide, lightweight skis on
my feet on some kind of trolley that runs on rails along the side of a
runway. On the other side of the runway a man stands with similar equipment
on another trolley. We are both clutching short handles in our hands, which
are attached by long ropes to the airplane that stands revving its engines
a bit in front of us. As I look over at the man, the propeller stream keeps
blowing my hair into my eyes making it hard to see (I should have accepted
the goggles they offered me, I guess), but it looks like the man has
something strapped to his back. He shouts something at me, but the engine
noise drowns out all other sound.
Suddenly the plane lurches into motion and starts pulling us along, faster and faster. The pull gets stronger, and I have to lean back to avoid getting pulled off my feet. This causes the tips of the skis to lift and the skis to act as airfoils, and suddenøly I am airborne, the clattering of the trolley fading rapidly below me. I am flying! Air skiing! I can not see much because the wind makes my eyes water, but the feeling is wonderful! After a minute or so I get the knack of meneuvering, and slide slowly sideways over until I'm next to the man. "This is fantastic!" I shout at the top of my voice. "Sure is!" he replies, releasing his grip with one hand for a moment to give me a thumbs up. "But how do we get down again?" I ask. He turns his head to look at me and gasps. "They didn't give you a parachute?!" Oh bugger...
