Naturally I decide to take the case. Not only is a case a case and a dame a dame, but money is money and I badly need some. Besides, I already know who the three most likely suspects are - Fred, Astra and Exotica - so solving the case should be easy. Wait a minute! I'm Exotica. If I take the case, then it could create a conflict of interest. But surely if I did do it I'd have remembered? I'm pretty sure I must be innocent. That narrows the suspects down to two.
"I'll take the case," I tell the broad. "But there's one thing I have to know. Why do you care what happened to you? And how do you know that he's been murdered?" (I wonder whether I ought to have said "how do you know that you've been murdered?" instead, but that sounded too weird.) "That's two things. Anyway, I know that he's been murdered because his body has a sword sticking out of it and is oozing blood all over my living-room carpet. I don't know how I'll ever get the stain out. And I care about what happened to you because I was married to him." That startles me. It seems that in front of me is the one person who didn't hate you, perhaps even loved you. Then I pick up on something that she said. "The body is oozing blood all over your carpet, you said. Does that mean that you haven't yet notified the police?"
