Still somewhat in a daze over having just escaped the darkness, he walked forward into the city, curious but not thinking about how the cave-folk would react to him. One of them spotted him and screeched something in a language where he can’t make out a single consonant or vowel. The rest of the cave-folk then saw him and reacted as if they’d seen a monster. They stopped whatever they were doing, dropped whatever they were holding, and frantically, uttering this strange language, scurried into the nearest cyclopean houses and buildings. After little more than a minute, Jacques was completely alone in this area of the city.
Or so he thought, until he heard the sound of smashing and squeals behind him. He turned around and saw one of the cave-folk desperately banging on one of the closed doors. Jacques guessed they must be too scared to risk opening the door for this thing, but he noted that this cave-folk looked different than the others: while it still didn’t have eyes, the skin formed in a way which made it look more human than fish-like. It could probably pass for an exceptionally ugly human in his world. He also noted that it was a good deal taller than the other cave-folk he had seen, standing well above 5 feet, though still a bit short by human standards. And while none of these cave-folk seemed particularly clean or well-fed, this thing seemed extremely filthy and gaunt in comparison. Jacques realized why they wouldn’t let him in and noted the bitter irony of it all: even in this strange place, outcasts existed.
