Sara Sad and Angry

The Black Void - Episode 741

Let me correct myself. I did not exactly bump into Sara. Rather, a very angry Sara threw open the door and bumped straight into me.

"Did you like what you saw?" she yelled back inside, seemingly oblivious to my ears being quite close. Then she noticed me. "Oh, I'm sorry."

"That's okay," I said. "Here, let me help you with your stuff." Her copy of the script was in at least fifteen different places. Her purse was on the ground, but right next to her, and luckily nothing had spilled out. I picked her jeans up off the floor. That's when I noticed she was still in the miniskirt.

"Thanks," she said, as I handed her the jeans and twelve pages of the script. "Did you know there's a peephole in the wall in that room?"

"You know, you shouldn't have told me that." I thought had a chance with her. No reason to ruin it the first time I get to talk to her one-on-one.

"Eh, it doesn't matter. I'm never changing there again. Not after I caught Jasper while I was getting that itchy padding out of my bra. Oh, he makes me so angry! Trying to blame it on Mitch and John! Do you think, if he could actually do voice impressions, he'd be hanging around here?" I shook my head no. It wasn't going to matter if she noticed or not. "You're the only normal one around here. You and Wu." That's right. Wu never actually made it through the traffic. For all I know he came to his senses and left the cast unannounced.

Sara stormed off. I ran to catch up with her. "Look, Sara, if you want to quit, just tell John. You shouldn't have to put up with all this."

"No, don't you get it? I have to take this role, as demeaning as it might be! All my life I've dreamt of coming to California and being an actress! So last year I hopped on a Greyhound and came here. Now I can't get a part in any of the major studios' films, even a minor part, because they say I can't act. But I can't pay my way into acting school and get better because I can't earn any money making movies. Oh, I've tried the usual menial jobs you're supposed to do while you're waiting for your big break. Got fired from three of them already." She threw her hands up in the air, spilling everything again, then broke down, sobbing.

"Did you take the bus here, Sara?" She nodded, still crying. I started to pick up her stuff. "All right. Listen to me, this is what we're going to do. I've got a car. We'll take my car, and we'll go get something to eat. I'll pay. And then you can change into your jeans - or not, it's up to you - and we'll talk like normal people without any of this craziness around here. And then I'll drive you to your apartment, and I'll walk with you, and make sure you get in the door. How does that sound?"

Through the sniffling she mumbled something that sounded like "Okay." I let her carry her purse, shifted my stuff, her jeans, and the folder with her script into my left arm, and swung my right arm around her. All right, so it wasn't how I wanted to ask Sara Hewit out, but it worked, so I can't complain.

  1. The date goes fine, I am (of course) a perfect gentleman, and you can see a chemistry developing during the rehearsals.
  2. Something unexpected happens during the date.
