Out of Hiding

After a short time, the talking stops, and I hear footsteps receding down the corridor. But is it one person's footsteps, leaving the other still right outside the door, or two?

Deciding that it was two, I emerge from my hiding place.

1. I was wrong. The door opens, and I don't have time to hide. I grab a syringe, as the nearest thing to a weapon readily available.
2. I resume my interrupted search of the room, and in a desk drawer I find what might be the key to the mysterious box.
3. I resume my interrupted search of the room.
