Needing to Talk

The Black Void - Episode 69

When I enter the resource room, I see that Mr Jones, the social studies teacher, is already there. He is aged about thirty, a tall thin man, indeed so much so that the students call him "Beanpole" (though not to his face, of course). I walk over to where he is sitting, engrossed in a book.

He senses my approach and looks up and smiles at me. "Hello. What can I do for you?"

"Hello, Mr Jones. I'd like to talk to you about the mystical meaning of the square root of minus one," I say.

Perhaps understandably, he seems a little startled for a moment. Then he says:

  1. "Well, neither math nor mysticism exactly falls within my area of expertise. You probably know as much or more about this as I do."
  2. "You've just been doing imaginary numbers in your math class, I guess. It's a fascinating branch of mathematics, isn't it?"
