Meeting the Boss

"See that door just ahead and on the left?" he says. I do. A sign on it reads "J. Smith, CEO." The guard continues: "We're going in there. I'm not going to make the mistake of knocking, as I don't want you behind me. So you're going to knock and then you go in, with me right behind you."

I do as he says. Inside, sitting behind a desk with a PC on it, is a distinguished-looking middle-aged man in a smart suit. "This is one of the latest arrivals, sir," the guard says.

"And you have brought her to me why?"

"She tried to incite an uprising. Grabbed a guard's gun from him."

"So you don't want to be a slave?" the boss says, clearly now addressing me.

"No. You have no right..."

He interrupts. "The ones with the guns are the only ones who have rights. Unfortunately for you, that's us. The sooner you learn that, the better it will be for you."

He turns back to the guard.

1. "Make her strip down to her bra and panties, and then chain her up in the processing hall as a reminder to the other new arrivals that anything less than total obedience will not be tolerated."
2. "She evidently has spirit. I can use a woman like her. Of course, first she has to learn that failure to co-operate does not pay. So break one of the fingers on her left hand for me. Any further disobedience will incur far harsher punishment."
3. "Lock her up in a cell for 48 hours on a bread and water diet. Perhaps that will get her to reconsider her attitude."
4. "She would be too much trouble as a worker, but ideal as an experimental subject for testing the mind-altering drugs that we are developing."
5. Then he seems to change his mind, and turns back to me. "Perhaps I should explain to you why it is in your own best interests to obey orders."
