"Your Royal Highness," the two guards say, snapping to attention. The
imposter (as you view her) acknowledges them with a nod, but does not say
anything. (She has a lot of your jewellery stuffed in her pockets, those
apparently being the items of "sentimental value" that she mentioned.)
A little nervously, one of the guards says: "I don't recall seeing a maidservant enter your quarters, Your Highness." "Well obviously she did, or she couldn't be coming out again," the imposter says tartly. She adds: "How lomg have the pair of you been on guard here?" "Ever since you retired to your quarters about four hours ago." "There you are, then. Juliana has been inside my quarters for longer than that." "The two of you seem to be dressed for going outside," the guard persists. "I'm not sure that would be wise. It's very late and as far as I know the witch still hasn't been apprehended. At the very least, I think I should accompany you in case of trouble." "That won't be necessary. We are not actually going outside. I wanted to stretch my legs before retiring for the night, but I will only be walking within the castle. I wouldn't dream of going outside. But the passages can be very chilly in comparaison to my nice warm room, so the two of us have wrapped up warmly." The guard says: "Something seems fishy. You're under duress, aren't you? That's not a servant behind that veil but the witch, I bet." He pulls the veil aside, and then looks from one to the other identical face in confusion. "You were right," your companion says, recovering quickly. "That is the witch, Maggie. She enchanted herself to look just like me so that she could enter the castle undetected. She was trying to kidnap me." "No, she's the imposter!" you protest.
