You feel that you should be panic-stricken at the discovery that you have
become an android, but in fact you feel no emotion whatsoever. You have
retained all your human memories, and even the core of your personality,
but in your new form emotions are alien to you. You can think only
logically.
Checking out your systems, almost without realising it - on start-up this began automatically and you had no choice but to complete it - you find that everything is operating at full effectiveness. Your diagnostic checks complete (which takes less than a second), you are able to give your full attention to your reflection. You are viewing yourself in a full-length mirror which the android woman perhaps wheeled into position for that purpose. She is standing next to it, so that you can see that the two of you are all but identical, except that she is clothed and you are still naked. Not that it really matters, as you can see that your pubic region is completely featureless. In any case, you are not capable of feeling shame or embarrassment. You know that when androids wear clothes, they do so only to ensure that any unfamiliar humans whom they may have to interact with do not feel uncomfortable. Your design does include breasts, quite large ones, but they lack nipples. You are fairly tall - 5' 10" or so - and slim. The data which you can access concerning your systems does not include your weight, so you have no idea how heavy you are. "What is your status, A123?" the other says. From the information on yourself that you can access, you know that A123 is your designation. What the "A" stands for is not made explicit, but it would be logical for it to be "Android". You know that the other is A40, and that she is your superior in the command structure. The possibility that you might disobey her does not even occur to you. "Status nominal," you reply. "Nominal" means that all systems are operating normally and are fault-free. Your voice is noticeably deeper that it was when you were human. Satisfied as to your status, A40 says:
