Was it Amergin whose snores she could hear? Given the evidence of her
pointy ears, she had reluctantly come to the conclusion that what she
remembered of her experiences in the forest must be real rather than a
dream. Which meant that the snorer was almost certainly the bard. What if
Amergin had deserted her when she blacked out, though, and it was someone
else who lay sleeping next to her? That was an alarming thought.
Dammit, why can't I see anything? she thought. Aren't elves supposed to have better senses than humans do? Wanting to reassure herself as to the snorer's identity, she gave him a poke. Unfortunately, in the darkness she happened to poke him in a rather sensitive spot. The sleeper woke with a shriek of pain, frightening Sarah, who shrieked as well. "M'lady elf," came Amergin's voice. "What's the matter?" "I'm sorry for waking you, Amergin, but it's pitch black, and I could hear snoring, and I was frightened that it might not be you." "Well, it is me. If that is all that was bothering you, let's go back to sleep. By the way, I didn't expect you to pass out like that, but the salve has healed your cheek." "So fast? But I don't like sleeping outdoors. It makes me feel nervous. I've never done it before." "An elf who's never slept outdoors?!" Amergin was clearly astonished. "How can that be?"
