"Thank you," I say as we head back inside. "I'd like to do that. I don't
have anywhere else to go as yet. Tomorrow I must see about finding myself
somewhere to stay. Money is going to be a problem, though. All the time
I'm still at school, I don't know how I'm going to earn enough to pay rent
on a place and feed myself, never mind stuff like clothes. I've got some
US currency, but I don't suppose that it's any use here."
"It is actually," James says. "To avoid incomers being totally destitute when they arrive, the Bank of Tumbolia will exchange a wide range of 'real world' currencies for Tumbos. That includes US dollars. If I remember correctly, you get something like 9 Tumbos to the dollar." Since I have no idea how much a Tumbo will buy, that doesn't help me very much, but I decide not to pursue the matter for the time being. Instead I consider tonight's sleeping arrangements. The couch looks quite comfortable. "I don't think you'll need any blankets," James says. "The nights are pretty warm at this time of year. The bathroom's through that door there." I bid James good night, and he disappears into his bedroom. I use the bathroom facilities. Then I take off my shoes, turn out the light, and try to make myself comfortable on the couch.
