Riding On

The Black Void - Episode 5468

I've been in the saddle a couple of times, at my uncle's ranch in Montana, but it's been a few years since I visited him. So, it takes me a bit to get used to the jarring motion of the horse as it gallops. Don keeps one hand on the reins, and the other wrapped around my waist to keep me from falling off.

We ride on mostly in silence. Don seems narrowly focused on his quest, and stifles my few attempts at conversation, answering in monosyllables. He doesn't seem to have much of an interest in me or my world, outside of the fact that I may be connected to the Black Tome's magic. It's a bit off-putting, but I can't really complain, as he is helping me out. He's actually quite handsome, and under normal circumstances I'd probably try flirting with him. But this situation hardly qualifies as "normal."

After a couple of hours of riding:

  1. We arrive at what appear to be the weathered ruins of some ancient town. "Mercenaries have been known to use these ruins as a base." Don explains
  2. There is no sign of the mercenaries, yet. Don suggests we stop for a few hours, to rest and eat.
