I know that Omar (the man I've previously referred to as Black-beard) still
leads caravans that trade with the men at the facility, but they've never
come out to the village itself before. In fact, Omar is out with a caravan
at the moment, and not due back until tomorrow at the soonest.
When we learn of the approach of about six individuals, all armed and wearing the green and black uniform of the facility, Taymur is nervous that they have come for me. I try to assure him that after so long, they must consider me long since dead. Still he's not entirely convinced, and grabs his weapon from the closet. "I love you, Ari. Please be safe." I whisper my love for him in response, and we share a kiss. Tears run freely down my cheeks as he turns and heads for the entrance of town. The village isn't defenseless. I knew from my capture months ago that the villagers have guns, although they are less advanced than the machine guns that the men at the facility wield. They appear to resemble WWI era bolt-action rifles. Every home in the village has at least one, ours included. While I know how to use a gun, (my father was an avid hunter, and used to take me with him when I was younger) Taymur insists that I am not to handle one at all, ever. In his view, he is supposed to protect me, and if I have to pick up a weapon that means he's failed as a husband. It's an archaic notion, but sweet of him nonetheless. At any rate, since I've been pregnant, I have had no desire to handle a gun at all. All I can do at this point is wait and pray.
