I gulp. The goatherd is quite a handsome lad, though he looks no more than nineteen, so I suppose that it could be worse. I will try to slip away tonight once he is asleep and then escape from the village, but I decide that until then I shall have to pretend to be the dutiful wife so as not to arouse his suspicion.

Black-beard goes on: "He doesn't speak your language very well, but I'm sure that you'll manage."

And so we do. As I might have expected, given the little that I've learnt about my new husband, as a lover he is very eager but obviously totally inexperienced. However under my guidance he learns quickly.

  1. So much so, and he's such a sweet, good-natured young man, that I find myself reconsidering my position. Perhaps I should stay?
  2. But I'm still determined to sneak away tonight. Now I'll feel slightly guilty, though.
