I consider trying to call up the disk or questioning the five faces. I
would like to know why and how I have been saved from death. But I have a
strong sense that doing anything other than entering one of the three
portals that I have been offered would be badly received. I have been
given the chance to return to life, and I don't want to risk that being
withdrawn.
I don't like Anorkin, who wants to use me for his own ends and is
something of a bully as well, but maybe I would emerge elsewhere in
Doria. But even if I should find myself back with Anorkin, that still has
to be better than either Theras or Artazed. In either of those two
places, I would be a fugitive from those who want to kill or enslave me.
So I step through the leftmost portal.
-
I find myself precisely where I was when I lost consciousness, looking up at Anorkin. "I think you're going to live," he says, astonishment in his voice.
-
I find myself standing outside an isolated, but rather impressive, mansion. Perhaps I am supposed to meet whoever lives there? I go up to the door and knock. It is answered by a servant. "Did you wish to see Lord Maximilian?" It's Captain Max's rssidence.
-
As in option 2, but though I see the flunkey's lips move I can't hear anything. Dammit, I'm still deaf and - I realise - wearing the sackcloth dress. The spirits, or whatever they were, apparently saw undoing those things as being beyond their remit.
-
I find myself looking at a slightly older version of myself. It must be Naomi! I recall that she had developed the ability to slow or stop the ageing process, so she doesn't look her fifty years. But how is she here, when she was swallowed by a disk?
