"The Canterbury Tales" Come Second Best

The Black Void - Episode 518

I can't be having one of my brighter days. I have to multiply 142,857 by 4, then by 5, and finally by 6, and then write down the answers in a neat column, before light eventually dawns. You continually get the same 6 digits in the same order for the result, with only the "starting point" changing. How mystical is that! I am disappointed to find that multiplying by 7 gives 999,999 - though even that is an impressive result in its own way. Come to think of it, there were only six possible distinct answers with that property, and those have all been used up by multiplying by each of 1 to 6 in turn, so multiplying by 7 had to break the pattern.

  1. The teacher, no doubt spotting that I am not paying attention, asks me a question.
  2. The lesson eventually ends.
