Laboratory Assistant

The Black Void - Episode 468

I sigh in relief. A laboratory assistant didn’t sound too bad, and anything was better than carrying babies.

The man ruffles through several papers spread neatly across the table. “It looks as though Professor Maxwell is in need of a laboratory assistant. He examines you closely and says softly “Yes, I think you’ll be perfect for him.

“Hold out your arm” the man commands. Hesitantly, I lay my arm on the table. The man grabs a firm hold of it and imprints it with a small, square stamp.

When I get your arm back, I stare at it, perplexed.

“When you’re provided to your master, that marking will be burned onto your skin permanently. Memorize that number. When you’re asked you identify yourself, you will state your number along with your name your name. When you receive a name, you’re you state that as well. Do you understand?”

I nod weakly and he then hands me a slip of white paper, and points towards the hallway directly behind him.

”You should head straight down until you reach the end of the hallway. There, you’ll find a set of different colored doors. Go through the blue one and give the men inside this note. They will then take you to your owner. He stares at me darkly. “Don’t try to enter any of the other doors you may pass, or there will be trouble.”

I walk past the desk and hear him call “Next” from behind me. The hallway in front of me appears to be very wide and long, about a bus length’s wide and a high school’s length long. Along the walls are windowed doors. Next to them lay thin golden plaques with what you assume are the names of different scientist encrypted on them. Remembering the man’s warning, I stay in the middle of the hallway.

I suddenly remember something I had received. I glance at my pant leg. Shoved down there is a note that I received from the woman in front of me: A note which could hopefully answer some of the questions on your mind.

I scan the area around me. The man at the desk in currently helping a small, curly red-head and appears to be paying no attention to me. The windows around me were blurry when you looked through them.

Or at least, I can’t see through the windows from this side of them. Perhaps someone could see just fine from the other ends. I then study the ceiling. It appears to be devoid of security cameras, but with today’s technology, cameras can be made smaller than a marble.

My anticipation to read the note is overwhelming, but is it worth the risk?

  1. Slowly, and slip the note out of my pocket and take a look.
  2. I decide leave it there and wait for a better time to read it.
  3. I suddenly realize I should use this time to try to escape.
