Five Seconds of Frantic Thought

The Black Void - Episode 4269

The stranger evidently has very good hearing, or else I wasn't quite as quiet as I had thought. Now that I've been detected, I know that I will be in trouble with Anorkin whatever I do. At least he can't do anything punitive in front of the stranger if he's pretending that I'm Naomi. So I nervously enter the study, wondering what I should say.

Should I try to foil the mage's scheme and tell the stranger that I am not Naomi? Would that be brave, or merely foolish? Would he believe me? And how much worse a punishment would I incur from Anorkin?

Supposing the stranger did believe me. Would Anorkin dare to take action against someone who, judging by the appellation "milord", is evidently an important person? Could the newcomer protect me, maybe even take me away with him?

As I enter the room, the stranger sees my face for the first time, and he gasps in astonishment. "Milady!" he says. "It really is you!"

  1. "I thought that I'd better fulfil the wish that you expressed to see me," I reply.
  2. I summon up all my courage and say: "But I'm not Naomi. And Anorkin knows it."
  3. Before I can reply, I feel Anorkin's mind in mine, attempting to control me.
