Of course, a good reason for the nothing happening was that just at that
time there was a power outage and the machine never got a chance to do
whatever it was designed to. I expected the lights to come on again at
least a few seconds later, which they didn't. This seemed to indicate that
either they didn't have any back-up generators, which I thought was rather
lax, or whatever had knocked out the main power had also knocked them out
as well. It was all rather confusing. There were screams of pain and a series of loud thuds and I felt myself being released from the machine. None too gently, either. A further indignity I had to suffer was being hoisted over someone's shoulder in a fireman's lift. The rest seemed a blur until I found myself outside in the cold night air. The sky was clear and with a full moon out I looked around to see that I appeared to be in the middle of a desert with nothing to see but a few highlighted cacti. It was also extremely cold, and I shivered involuntarily. There was a slight thud and an 'oof'. I turned to see that Jane had been unceremoniously dumped next to me. "Are you all right?" I immediately asked. Jane didn't say anything, but to my surprise pulled me towards her. We tried to huddle together for warmth, while waiting for a sign of whoever had rescued us. For a few minutes there was nothing, but then there was a loud boom and the ground shook. Jane stifled a scream and I hugged her even tighter.
