You decide that five or ten minutes spent easing the pain in your leg
would be time well spent. Ideally you would like to immerse your knee in
cold water, but you realise that there is no way that you are going to be
able to manoeuvre yourself so that you can put your knee into a hand-
basin. Perhaps if you took a paper towel, soaked it in water, and wrapped
it around your knee it would help.
Unfortunately you are wearing tights under your pants, so for this to be effective you are going to have to temporarily remove them. You take off your shoes, then your pants, and finally your tights. You see that you have a very nasty bruise on your knee and the whole surrounding area is red and swollen. You gingerly feel your kneecap with your fingers, but luckily it doesn't seem to be broken. You soak a paper towel in cold water and wrap it round your knee. You intend to leave it in place for five minutes or so and see if it helps, before removing it and getting fully dressed again.
