My improvised bedsheet-rope proves just long enough for the task, my toes
grazing the ground as I run out of slack. I notice I'm in front of the
stables that are adjacent to the inn, and there are several coaches
parked outside. This give me an idea, but first I'll need to get Baras. I
rush back into the inn and upstairs to Baras' room, praying it's not too
late.
I breathe a sigh of relief when Baras answers his door groggily. It's well past midnight at this point, so it's no surprise that he was asleep. I'm just glad I got to him before Lukas and Ulrich did. "We have to go, NOW." I whisper. "They know about Gustav. Come on." As we hurry down the stairs, I explain my idea to Baras. We'll only have one chance to pull this off. We exit the inn and head over to the stables. Inside, a solitary old man is serving as both stablehand and watchman. He eyes us suspiciously. Baras steps forward, and in his most authoritative voice says "Mr. Salley and his assocaites asked us to check up on their horses. They tend to spook easily, and with this storm going on..." "At this time of night? Besides, you didn't come in with Mr. Salley earlier. How do I know you're telling the truth?" "No, we met him here this evening." I say. "Listen, Mr. Salley will be angry if he has to come down here himself. You wouldn't like him when he's angry, trust me."
