I'm dumbfounded. How could this have happened? This place was guarded! I
study ramsom note with concern and disgust. The scrawled writing is hard
to read clearly, but the name at the bottom of the note says it all:
Gustav The note basically states that both John and Sara are now in his grasp, and gives instructions, to Don specifically, that I am to be turned over to him upon our arrival in Theras. The letter implies that if we attempt to go to the King, or back to the Marquess for help, Sara and John will be harmed or even killed. Something's not adding up. How did they track us down? The mercenaries must have trailed Teran back to us at the inn last night, and then on to John's castle. They would also have to have had the Van Alder estate under surveillance waiting for our departure. "If they were after me, why did they take Sara? If they could break in here so easily, why not just abduct me and be done with it?" I ask. "They want to take us all out of play at once." Don says bitterly. "This cannot be allowed to stand. Sara..." his voice breaks. I move to comfort him. "Don, I'm sorry to have gotten you involved in this. Under the circumstances, you've got no choice but to play along and give me up to them. I want to make sure Sara gets back to you safely. Just...take care of our babies for me, ok?"
