No Time to Tarry

The Black Void - Episode 3380

Not too long after my abortive attempt to get John talking to me freely once more, the barge reaches the landing stage at River's Glen, and we disembark. "I want to hire a coach as quickly as possible," Teran says. "We attracted more attention than I would have wished the last time that we were here. [3300] Word of us will almost certainly have got to Gustav. He would have sent some men here to investigate, and it's possible that they won't all have left yet, just in case we should show up again."

"So a new dress and some shoes will have to wait?"

"I'm afraid so, Hari. The first sizeable place that we come to on the road, I promise that we'll get the coach to stop and see what can be done."

  1. All goes smoothly, and within fifteen minutes we are on our way in our hired coach.
  2. The owner of the only coaching establishment in town quotes a price that makes Teran's eyebrows shoot up. Evidently the man can sense our desperation. "If we accept his price, we'll be pretty much broke," Teran tells us.
  3. But it seems that there are no coaches for hire. We fear that this may be more than bad luck, and that the proprietor of the town's coach stable may have been "nobbled" by Gustav's men.
  4. We hire a coach but, as the horses are being attached to it, two men with drawn swords walk into the stable yard. Another five minutes and we would have been safely away.
