Trina's Keen Observation

The Black Void - Episode 3081

"Of course. Thank you for your hospitality." I say, grateful that I have a place to hide until morning. Max hands the evidence back to me, then turns to Trina.

"Trina, it's late enough that you don't have to go back out again. You stay with Hari here tonight, get her something to wear and show her where she can get some sleep." Max says. Trina nods, and walks out of the main room down a hallway, gesturing for me to follow. I do so, and we end up in a bedroom. Trina begins picking through a wardrobe for some clothes for me, eventually coming up with an ensemble not unlike the one she herself is wearing, only in purple rather than red. [3015]

"I suppose you look down upon me." Trina says as I dress,

"What do you mean?"

"You didn't have to lie to me earlier. Did you think you couldn't trust your secrets to a common whore?" she says accusingly.

"No, that's not it - I just...I've been through a lot, and I wasn't about to trust anyone at that moment. I trust you now, though. Thank you for your help." I say, trying to reassure her.

She softens her gaze somewhat, then sighs and apologizes. I walk over to a full length mirror and attempt to adjust the flimsy outfit. I can see Trina in the mirror behind me, looking at me with a strange expression on her face. I turn about and ask her what's on her mind.

"You're pregnant, aren't you?" she blurts out suddenly. I gasp and cover my mouth in surprise. How could she have possibly known that? In my shock I find myself nodding in affirmation.

"Is it that obvious?" I ask. "I thought it would be another month at least before anyone noticed."

"Oh, don't worry, most people won't notice for a while yet. But, I have a certain sense about these things. I've seen it happen quite often in my line of work, you know." I am reminded again that there dosen't seem to be much in the way of birth control around in this time. "Do you know the father?" she asks.

I nod mutely. "Well, that's more than most of us girls can say when it happens." Trina continues. I can hear her voice tinged with bitterness.

"Trina, were you ever?..."

"Just once, a couple of years ago, right when I started out. The Brothers of Ignatius took me in when it got so I couldn't work. Of course, after my son was born..." she pauses, her voice catching. "...they took him. In addition to the refuge, the Brothers also run an orphanage, but it's all the way on the other side of the city."

"I'm so sorry." I say.

"It's ok. I just, you know, don't like to talk about it. There was no way I could have raised him on my own, anyway. It was probably for the best."

  1. We spend some more time talking. Since Trina has confided in me, I feel I can do so with her as well. She's the closest thing I've got to a friend.
  2. We soon go to sleep. I wake up in the morning, say goodbye, and begin my trip back to the Grand Hall
  3. We soon go to sleep. I awaken in the morning, and find that the ledger page is missing! Someone must have taken it while I slept!
  4. We soon go to sleep. However, we are awakened sometime later by a pounding on the door.
