I glance over at the supervising monk. He seems to be engrossed in his
book. I'm relieved by that, for all that I tell myself that I'm under no
obligation to stay if I don't want to. Trina and I slip out through the
back door without his being aware of it.
As we walk along back alleys, I ask: "Will Max still be up at this time of night?" "Oh yes. He keeps much the same hours as his girls, and we mostly work from dusk till an hour or so before dawn. By the way, don't tell him that we met at the refuge. He might be cross if he knew that I'd gone there when I should have been working. Trade's been very quiet tonight, and I thought I'd be more comfortable there than walking the streets." "I'm sorry to have dragged you away." "No need to apologise... Here we are." She knocks on the door of a house that is a little bigger than most in the area, without being in any way remarkable. After a short delay, the door is opened to reveal a thick-set bearded man aged around thirty. "Hello, Trina," he says. "Why are you back so early?" "I ran into Hari here, Max," Trina replies, pointing at me. "She's just arrived in town and has been working as an independent. I explained the way that things are here, and she said that she'd like to work for you." Oops! I can see how Trina might have gained that impression. "That's not quite... ," I begin. "Come in then," Max says, not paying any attention to my protest.
