"Thank you for all your help," I say.
"It was a pleasure," James replies. I walk out of the library with the book under my arm, reflecting that at least it has confirmed for me that Tumbolia is on the imaginary axis. Only once I am outside do I realise that I've taken the book out of the library without being asked for a library ticket. Nor was my borrowing of it logged. James doesn't even know my last name. I wonder whether to go back inside and ask if this was in order, but I decide that so long as I return the book within a day or two then no harm will have been done. I pick up a pentacycle from the parking space - I'm not sure whether it's the same one that I arrived on or another one, as they all seem identical. There is a small basket attached, in which I put the book as well as my shoulder bag, after first removing a single sock from the basket. I guess that had just arrived from some washing machine back in the real world. Putting my bag in the basket reminds me that in it I should have about a hundred dollars that I've saved up. I'd been intending to buy myself some new clothes, but I never got to do that before I went through the Black Void. I wonder whether US dollars are accepted here. I hope that they are, as I am starting to feel hungry. It's a long time since I last ate. As I cycle, I keep an eye open for a likely place to eat. I don't have a credit card, by the way. I'm not sure whether I'm legally old enough, but in any case my parents thought that I was too young. Thinking of my parents makes me wonder if I'll ever see them again.
