A nasty thought occurs to you. When Annabeline and Maggie return, will
they really return you to your rightful form and let you go? Aren't they
more likely to decide that you know too much and to lock you up in that
nasty dungeon? In which case it would be better to leave before they get
back, in fact the sooner the better, and hope that they won't be able to
track you down. Of course, looking just like the Princess is going to make
it difficult for you to disappear without trace, but you decide that you
will have to try.
You feel that you ought to be able to manage a daring ninja-style escape. After all, you managed to break into the castle and reach the Princess's room without being detected. But then you weren't wearing a floor-length but low-cut gown of heavy silk and a pair of slippers. Not the best outfit for doing any serious climbing. (And if you want to avoid the guards, who given your "daddy's" displeasure with you would almost certainly try to stop you leaving, climbing is what you are going to have to do.) You look through Annabeline's wardrobe, but as you had feared none of her other dresses are much better. They all have floor-length skirts. None of her shoes are suited to climbing either. So you do the best you can. You take off your dress, the constricting corset beneath it and the heavy underskirt, leaving you in only your knickers. Then you take a pair of scissors to the dress and cut round so that the skirt length will be six inches above the knee. You put the dress back on, but decide that it would be best to climb down barefoot. You want both hands free, and unsurprisingly the Princess doesn't have a backpack, so you won't be able to carry any footwear with you.
