Although I've decided not to look for work till the morning, since I have
only recently got up I don't want to go back to bed again just yet. I feel
in need of some exercise and fresh air, and I'm hungry too. I decide that
I'll address all three of these issues by going for a short walk and then
looking for a place to eat. (I could have eaten in my own inn's dining
room, of course, but then I wouldn't have had the chance to stretch my
legs.) It's still light out and, though it will be dark by the time that I
return, this is - I'm assured by a member of staff in reply to my
question - a fairly respectable part of town. So I don't anticipate any
trouble.
I leave the inn and walk for about half a mile along a pleasant tree-lined boulevard. I find a respectable-looking inn in which to dine. If the staff are surprised to have a woman eating alone - something that isn't usual here - they manage not to show it. I have quite a pleasant meal. I don't hurry, so it is the best part of ninety minutes later when I pay my bill, leave the inn and head back along the boulevard. It is fully dark by now, but there are what appear to be gas-lamps at intervals, so I have no difficulty in finding my way.
