Don makes a good show of agonizing over the decision, but his mouth eventually forms into a smile that betrays his intentions. "Well, your riding has improved of late, and we certainly don't want you going out of your mind. Very well, you may accompany me."

"Really? Don, that's wonderful!" I say, surprised at how accepting he's acting.

"Yes, well, I too would miss you terribly otherwise. Also, I've been wanting to show you around Laralia for a while now, but we haven't had much occasion to travel since we escaped. This journey will take us north, into the heart of the country, to our very capital, Theras, and court of King Henri. The journey should be safer than our last, but is not free from peril. Once we arrive, I will take up tasks in service of his Majesty, to earn the gold we need. Harry, you must promise that you will stay out of harm's way whenever possible. I could not forgive myself if something were to happen to you."

"I promise." I say, though I feel guilty for not revealing my pregnancy. Still, if I told him now, I'm sure he'd change his mind.

  1. Two days later, our preparations made, we set out on the road.
  2. My guilty conscience gets the better of me, and I blurt out "Don, I think I'm pregnant." I mentally kick myself, as I'm now sure I won't be allowed to go.
  3. "One thing first" Don says. "A knight going on campaign with a woman he's not wed to will cause quite a scandal in the royal court. I'd very much like to make an honest woman of you before we go. If you'll have me, that is."
