My white garment is now stained with red. I hadn't wanted to kill the
guard, but I know that I can't afford the time to agonise over what I've
done. Nor do I have enough time to free Don, who would of course have been
a big help in a fight.
Fortunately, when Maris and the other man turn round to see what is going on it gives Zal the chance to act whilst they are distracted. He manages to kick the henchman in the most painful of places - I'm sure that I needn't elaborate - and he sinks to the ground, writhing in agony. But Maris has reacted very quickly. He is already running towards me, well clear of Zal. He draws his short sword as he comes. I wrench my knife out of the fallen man's chest, but Maris's weapon has a much longer reach, and he will be on me within a few seconds. In desperation, I throw the knife at him.
