Maris has left only one man to guard Don and Nadia, it seems. Even if
their hands are tied, that seems like overconfidence on Maris's part. If I
could manage to creep round behind the guard and take him out quietly
enough, then I could free Don and Nadia without Maris and his other
henchman being any the wiser, since they would be facing Zal and would
have their backs to me. Zal would see what I was doing, though, and could
keep Maris talking long enough for the three of us to creep up behind
Maris and his other man and take them out too. (If we just ran for it
instead, that could leave Zal in a very dangerous position when Maris
realised that his prisoners had gone.)
Obviously there is a lot that could go wrong, but it seems to me like the best chance that I'm likely to get to free Don and Nadia. The only door leads out onto the street right next to Zal and Maris, so I decide to leave by the same open window that I entered by. That will bring me out at the back of the shop. I recall seeing an alley there that runs along behind the backs of all the premises. With any luck, I will soon come to a cross-alley that will bring me back to the main street at some point to the rear of the guard. The long wait till midnight gave me a chance to search the place and, in spite of the very dim light, I had managed to find quite a substantial knife that I imagine was used for cutting carpets to size. I am prepared to use that on the guard if need be, and it will also come in handy for cutting my friends' bonds.
